Like the lunar module this home was wrapped in foil to protect it during extraterrestrial travel.

Towd Point Beach

I did not take this photo but I did arrange having it made. The view is looking south into North Sea Harbor from the Peconic Bay. The spit of land and beach on the left side shows Towd Point Road crossing a charming bridge then ending at a sandy bay beach.

Anglo in the Hamptons

This nice home looks to me like it could also be in England. We seem to have a lot of homes here with British design roots.

Winter Storms

We have had a lot of wind this winter, Much warmer weather than in past winters, but a lot of wind.

A new restaurant opened in Riverhead this year, the Riverhead Project. I think the place is exceptional with exciting food and and a chic decor that makes good use of a period mid century modern building. The menu is careful to note food sources in the style of Chez Panaisse. Eating here is a rare dining treat on Long Island. Warning, the signage for restaurant is almost as discrete as The French Laundry in Napa, keep your eye out for a just  t R P

I Like It Just Like It Is

These trees on Gin lane have been trimmed on a very regular basis. This form of trimming is known as pollard. I think of this as the European version of Bonsai. Both form of plant training are intended to arrest growth and keep things as they are.

Alien Invasion

The whole thing about mold has been a bit of a mystery to me. We have had old damp homes on the east end for over 300 years. So where did this black mold come from. It is clear from the under side of this flying saucer that the black mold is an import.

Ivy Draped

The ivy on this gate post looks more like it was poured on like a sauce from on top than grown up from the ground.

Look OUT ! Black Ice !

With warm days and crisp cold nights our area is often prone to black ice. Black Ice is a thin glazing often hard to spot until you find you are sliding on it.

Snow Gauge

Measuring the depth of snow is tricky as it matters where you take the sample. If I sample in my driveway where the drift forms, we have over 2 feet of snow, if I measure the hump in my front lawn we barely got an inch. I like the dining table in the back yard, it is a protected spot without being a snow trap. And I do not have to go outdoors to see the snow depth! I would call this one just over 5 inches.

Early Signs of Spring

It seems very early to be seeing snow drops in the garden, I think we will be seeing real snow later tonight.

Cubist Life

I love this home on the bay side of Meadow Lane. It is nice how a home can be set nestled on the edge of the bay. The larger ocean side commands more of a set-back from the waters edge.

Spot of Color

I love the bold use of color in this Water Mill Carriage House. The stairs have a very English feel to me that I can not account for.

Mobil Home

This very nice barn started out in New England, got taken apart and moved to Shinnecock  Hills. The interior has a nice open plan with the rich textures of an old house.

Nice Crown

The trim rail on this roof is a reference to a widows walk. Popular in New England homes, the widows walk was a high point in the home where the residents of the home could keep an eye on the port hoping to spot a returning ship. Ships often went out for more than a year with no form of communication back to their home port prior to returning home.

Spud House

Potatoes like being under ground. They seem to have a second sense about their mother earth. I in a barn like this they can rest a long time. Up in my kitchen they do not last so long. The tone of the pink house is very nice with the silvery roof.

Passing Front

There is a big wind here as cold weather from the west is coming in. The wind kicked up the surf.

Room with a View

The open area on this porch is more closed in than on most homes. The framed openings have more the quality of a window without glass making a very nice frame to the captivating views.

I love this beach house in Quogue with it's observatory crown.

Cover Up

Today we put the covers on the pool. I have never waited this long to close the pool. It was worth waiting and having that fun swim.

The cover is built of five section. They fit together snug and keep out most of the leaves and stuff.

Twins

When I look at a pair of historic homes I wonder about their history. Did they get built at the same time or did the owner like the first house so much, he then built a second one like it? Maybe he only wanted to pay for one set of plans? Did the homes start out identical and then grow apart in design over time? The practice of building duplicate homes had started well before Levitt Town came on the scene, if not of that scale.

The End of the Grid

If the power grid is a dog, we are on the tail with Montauk at its tip.

Perfect in Yellw

This great Queen Anne cottage in Sag Harbor could not have better gingerbread details.

Jackson's

It is fun to have a visit to this real marina with an impresive  boat yard located at the south entrance to the Shinnecock Cannal.

Steel Span

The design of this bridge puts the structure up over the track bed, allowing the track to remain level without blocking boat passage in the canal below.

Sparkle Like Jewels

There is something about the way surf water covers a pebble at the beach that makes is sparkle like nowhere else. I think many like me have taken these jewels home to have them lose their luster when relocated.

He Built His House of Brick

The very original twisted brick work on this home might have been inspired by the curl in a pigs tail. What a fun bit of brick work.

New Years Day 20-12

It was very nice here today. I biked down to Little Plains Beach and took this photo.
