Spring Daises

My mood about daises varies. In a swath like this garden planting I think they look just great. Shasta Daises come next and Montauk Daises late in the season.

Timeless

This modern home on the beach near Old Town Road has not changed appearance since it was built in the mid 80s.

Weed Explosion

The chick weed in this pot was a nice tight green ground cover in the early spring. Then weed the bolted into this crazy mess. Replacements are in the tray to the left.

Steep Stairs

This old cellar stair is almost a ladder. I made it up and down in remarkably little space.

The seams of the brick walk are bursting with moss.

Classic Cottage Garden Blooms

Violets seem to like my garden a lot. They have been popping up all over. With deep sturdy roots they are hard to pull if you don't like where they appear.

Mixed Use

This walkway at Marders was put together with a mix of used brick and flag stone. It was fun to see the old yellow fire bricks used in a new way.

Oh! Balls

What a show these are!

Flag Poles

Many waterfront homes on the bays here have flag poles and fly the American Flag. This must be to avoid confusion about what country you are entering.

Glass Art

This great display of art glass at Marders Nursery seems to have more colors than the rainbow.

Spring Burst

Some plants like this rhubarb grow at an amazing rate in the spring. It seems hard to imagine that there was nothing showing in the field just four weeks ago.

Fall Out

When the cherry tree finishes its bloom it drops the petals en mass. It is best to keep the pool covered till this cycle has past or the pool skimmers get all clogged.

Decoration

I was making a photo of the rail detail. Newer homes are not likely to have graceful curves like this. The background of the photo points up the nice painted floor decoration on both floors.

Just the Basics

More typical in the south east, one does not see triple tab asphalt shingles used as a siding here very often.

Imagine, the sides of this shed did not need to be painted for 40 or 50 years.

Spot of Art

This cluster of sculpture is set in a small park area to the west of the Springs General store. This must be art country.

North Wind

With an open exposure to the Peconic Bay the wind has hit this gazebo hard.

Spring Light

I just liked how the sun coming through the window hit the tulips.

Winter Water

This time of the year the waters of the bay have a exceptional clarity.

In The Begining

This amazing very early farm house has just come on the market for sale.

I think there are at least five fireplaces, wide floors and a string of additions off the back.

Beach Report

Clean Power

With almost no creeks or rivers that might turn a water wheel.Wind was an important source of energy on the east end.

Dream Cottage

                                  When I hear 'beach cottage' this is what comes to mind for me.
                                                     Pure, simple- sun, beach, sand, water.

Artist Lair

Springs is noted for a history of artist's in residence. This classic farm house was the home of painters Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner.

Out near the End

At the tip of Springs is  Gerard Drive. The start of Gerard Drive is obscure, look out for the spot where Springs Fireplace Road bends to the left. At that point split off to the right. The homes on this spit of land have a real outer banks feel, very special.

 

 

Springs Central

North of East Hampton Village is the area of Springs. At the center they have a church, community center with local artists and a general store. This is the general store.  At lunch time I was in near and had a nice lunch at outdoor tables set just the to left of this photo.

Now that the garden is coming into bloom the views out the windows at 61 Old Town Rd are looking very good.

Climate Notes

The weekend of the Derby Southampton often sells out of fresh mint. After getting caught mint-less in the early 90's I started planting mint under the dryer vent. That way a warm pocket would provide my own mint on race day. This year my whole garden is FULL of mint way before race day. I better check my stock of bourbon.
