Yard Sale Finds

Today there was a yard sale at one of the older histiric homes in Southampton Village. This sizable sculpture of Pan was offered for sale among many interesting items.

While in the City

I stopped by my friends apartment and the wall was open to chase down a small leak. The building was built in 1929 but with the thick block walls and complex fittings it looked like it could all be much older, almost Roman.

Wild by Nature ?

In the late 1990s man planted wild flower fields became very popular. It turned out that these engineered fields are very tricky to maintain. The wild flowers that want growing  in your field might get over run by a bunch of weeds. Not the fun mix of colors you had hoped for. To start out the field has to be stripped of existing plants. Then large quantiies of expesive seed are needed. Birds or other critters might eat much of that seed. If all works out you get a great show, if very lucky you get a show again the next year.

What a Show

This week the Southampton Rose Society held their rose show and contest. The show was held at the Rogers Memorial Library. The rose garden outside was also in great form.

Parking by Permit

Parking is not permitted on many residential streets in the village, especially at night. However if one know in advance of parking needs for a party you can have the rules excepted for the time of your event.

Summer Splendor

The gardens at my friend Irene's house are in yet another bloom cycle. This garden is a real show stopper.

Hamptons Electric

Hard Sparks hits Main Street Southampton. The village posted our notice for this exciting up-coming event.

When is THE Parade

Some time in June people start asking 'when is THE PARADE'. In Southampton The Parade refers to the Fourth of July Parade. I was happy to see these signs at the train station parking lot, confirming that this year's parade will be on Wednesday the 4th. I was in Village hall today and asked about parade policy. The parade falls on the 4th unless the 4th is a Sunday. Then the parade is rescheduled. It is a great parade.

Garden Delight

My friend Hal has designed this delightful rose garden around his swimming pool. The back side of the property is a huge lawn with specimen plantings. If one was looking to buy a house, this is a great home to think about.

Bubble Bath

The guys who service my pool redirected the jets from the filter. This new direction give me one inch bubbles floating on the surface of my pool. Very festive I think.

Vintage Interior

Sometimes I see a home that has not altered since first conceived. This living room has the feel of time standing still.

Premium Potatoes

These potatoes are growing in one of the last ocean front farm fields that I know of in the Hampton's. I wonder how the potatoes feel about growing in this prime location.

New Garden

Last summer at about this time of the year I added new gardens to the front of the house. I was concerned how the new beds would do as they are on the north side of the house. My good luck, the beds are enough forward that the sun hits the plants passing just over the roof.

A Little Project

Today I did a little project. I got it in my head that the pool house should have air conditioning. I went to the store and bought a window AC unit that can be converted for through the wall. I went set out to make a trimmed opening and install my new AC unit.
Success!

Deer Proof

In the winter it seems deer will eat most anything. This home owner installed wood frames to keep the deer from stripping the bark from his fruit trees. I think this looks like a stylish solution.

Now Winter Hardy

In the past vinca was added to large pots of geraniums to give the edge some drape. I used to plant new vinca each year for it's nice variegated leaves. Now my vinca stays green almost all winter and comes back strong each spring. This year it popped up in other parts of my garden, maybe seeds from these blooms?

Sitting Proud

This fine old bay front home is located in the North Sea area just to the west of the Morton Wildlife Reserve. There are not many large properties on the bay side of Southampton. If this had been my family home I am sure I would have many excellent memories.

Pebble Beach, North Sea, NY

I had a house guest visiting from California, He was looking for shells for his six year old son. I took him up to North Sea Harbor for this fine selection of pebbles and shells.

Different Choice

This owners of this hedge on Hill Street have made some interesting choices. This hedge is NOT privet, the hedge is very carefully trained Yew. This hedge grows very slowly and much tighter than the quick growing hedges you see in most spots. The base planting is Lily-of-the-valley another rare choice for that setting. I like the blend of textures very much.

Rose Explosion

This past winter was very mild. It seems that the roses in our area liked this English winter.

Technology

I liked how the evening sun hit the older radio tower in the background and the newer one built on LIRR property. It is hard to ad a new tower in the village, it seems the RR is exempt from the zoning review process.

New Garden

One of the last large farm parcels in Southampton Village got sub divided into about 10 new building lots. As a by-product of this project a large lot was set aside and has now been developed into an impressive rolling field of perennial flowers. In the foreground here you can see some huge lupins.

Wave Invasion

I have spotted this huge wave in a number of homes in the Hamptons. I believe that many of these waves came to the Hamptons via Hicksville. The source being a large blue building with bright yellow trim.

Un Hampton Land

Set between Westhampton & Hampton Bays is the Village of Quogue. Main Street in Quogue is much less commercial than the other hamptons towns. This picture showing the very nice Inn at Quogue was taken at about 1:00 in the afternoon. Quogue takes pride in its quiet back water setting. The streets look very quiet for a day after Memorial Day.
