Sea of Gold

I am not sure what this flower is. The blooms look most like Butter Cups, but the leaves look more like Violets. The color was so impressive another man was also there on North Main Street taking pictures.
Detail of meadow.

Rites of Spring

Today we went for pansies at the garden center. We had a great selection of colors. There was some cold here last night, this plant can be very frost tolerant but does not do well in our hot summers.

1920's Stucco

In the mid-1980's good friends of mine bought this house on Old Town Road in Southampton Village. Over the past twenty some years the interior of the home has been renovated a few times. This year it was time to move on and the home is now listed for sale with four bedrooms, four baths and a fun gunite pool.

Wild Times

Growing up in Maryland there was a valley a short ways beyond our home. In the spring the valley was a giant sea of bright yellow. I was told that this was wild mustard like shown here from a field in Water Mill.

Face Lift

This fine historic home on South Main Street in Southampton Village is getting a new cellar. The house was likely first built as a summer cottage. Many summer cottages were first built on locust posts with no cellar just air space under the first floor with lattice to keep out critters. This home is lifted up on blocks so they can build a new foundation with cellar under the home.

BLast of ColoR

There are a few azaleas in our area that are in the woodland group. These shrubs like to grow in a shaded area and do not hold there foliage through the winter like most azaleas. In the early spring when the woods is mostly a mass of gray sticks these plants explode into color in a thicket of grays.

Pin Stripe

Very popular in other parts of the country. Raised Rib roofs are beginning to show up in the Hamptons. I think they look very smart. These roofs are now made of metal or composite materials.

The Glow

At 5:00 this evening the fog started to roll in again. Here the sun is just peaking through as it starts to set over the western end of Shinnecock Bay.

Other View

I drive by this hedge on Herrick Road often. From the street side the double ring design is not obvious. It was a nice surprise looking out from the steps of the building.

On the Dune

The tree farm on Wickapogue Road frames a nice view of this fine ocean front home. The shape on the roof line emulates the lines of the dunes.

Trail to the Marsh

The village has this nice little woodland park off Wickapogue Road. The feature of the park is a trail that leads down to a small pond with a very marshy edge. The green spots about the bridge are onion grass making an early show.

Change in the Weather

Yesterday we had wind from the west with not a cloud in the sky.

Today we have wind from the east with not a sky in the clouds.

Annual Rings

Like the annual rings on a tree privet hedge shows the cut lines from each year that the hedge is allowed to grow higher.

Power Weeds

I have always thought of the Dandelion as a summer flower, here is one in full bloom before the middle of March, I might have seen one in February!

The Tower

I found a nice view of this tower that over looks Old Town Pond. This home is a converted carriage house once part of a great estate that no longer exists.

It's a Wild Life

I was visiting my friend Bernard this afternoon. At about 5 pm this extended family of Guinea Hens showed up in the yard. I was informed that these birds are very noisey and rumored to be great consumers of tics.

Details

I was at a house on Hill Street. It is a very fine older home with beautiful details. When we went to get in our car I noticed these tiny pink blooms in the mulch around this tree base. The blooms have intense color, but are smaller than the eraser tip on a pencil. From the leaf shape the plants might be in the violet family.

Condo or Co-Op

This stylish bird house's has very nice details. The summer residents should be a great consumer of area bugs. Placement of these homes works best if the birds have a large open area to hunt in.

French Fantasy

Many of the homes in the estate section of Southampton are built as very personal expression of their owners taste. This home was built in the 1980s by the designer Clifford Stanton. The homes inside has high ceilings allowing for dramatic spaces with walls of glass opening onto the back garden.

Good Neighbors

If you choose not to run privet hedge along your lot line there are a lot of options one might select. These lot lines show a nice range of options. It is not common in the Hampton's to see vast open stretches on lawn bleeding from one lot into the next uninterrupted.

Overcast

It has been very gray today, the most even gray sky I have seen this winter, so gray one can not see where the light is coming from. Just a big gray sky, light but no shadows.

Nice Color

This home has been pink as long as I can remember. In 1984 my friend bought a house up the street. Back then the house was pink, very similar to the color today.
